It is with sadness that the New Year is marked by the death of Ipswich Lib Dem Cllr. George King at 68. Those that knew George well will know he had stoically battled various ailments for years.

Ipswich Liberal Democrats have issued a statement marking their thoughts following George's death:

"Ipswich Liberal Democrats are shocked and saddened by the sudden death of Cllr. George King. Our thoughts are with George's wife, Diane and the family at this difficult time.

George was a well respected and popular Councillor with a long record of dedicated public service in Ipswich, latterly as a Liberal Democrat Councillor for Whitehouse Ward.

His popularity was rooted in his 'pavement politics' style and readiness to champion causes he felt to be right. He brought to his campaigning, persuasive, and where necessary, combative skills learned over years as a seasoned and principled local politician. His experience and outlook equipped him well to stand up for ordinary people whose concerns he felt most keenly.

Passionate to improve the quality of life of Whitehouse Ward and Ipswich he was most animated when he saw people or causes being treated unfairly. His genuine desire to fight for the good of Ipswich is an example for all of us and Ipswich Liberal Democrats feel very privileged to have had the opportunity to work with him and learn from him.

George will be missed greatly by his political colleagues but also the people of Whitehouse whom he has represented so well and for so long".

George is survived by his wife, Diane, two daughters and a son.
