Lib Dems take Westgate on mixed night in Ipswich

2.13.56pm GMT Sun 6th May 2007

Ipswich Lib Dem Andrew Cann took the formerly safe Labour seat of Westgate with a winning margin of just 13 votes. This was despite Labour fighting a very dirty campaign (see more below).

This win was however tempered with the loss of Whitehouse to Labour. On what was nationally a very bad night for the Lib Dems however we held our own in Ipswich.

Overall little changed in Ipswich, with both main parties disappointed not to make the gains they had trumpeted before the campaign started.

-------------

Westgate campaign appeal. There are reports coming in that Labour members were making large numbers of defamatory remarks on the telephone to voters in Westgate in order to damage the reputation of the Lib Dem candidate, Andrew Cann. Andrew fought a positive campaign from start to finish. We have heard some of the things that were said and are shocked that Labour will lie so readily and so despicably in order to try to win. If you were telephoned by Labour and told defamatory things we would like to know - we do not intend to let this pass. Please e-mail andrew.cann@ipswichlibdems.org.uk who will contact you.
