Drug dealer clampdown nets 139 suspects in Ipswich5.54.13pm BST (GMT +0100) Thu 28th Jun 2007
Suffolk Police have arrested 139 suspects in Ipswich in recent times under Operation Academy. This follows months of dawn raids and crackhouse closures designed to put Class A drug dealers in jail and drive dealers out of no-tolerance Ipswich. Ipswich Liberal Democrats fully support the Police in successfully tackling this problem that was growing in Ipswich. Whilst there is much to do levels of offending have peaked and dropped last year by 12 per cent. Ipswich Borough Council is playing it's part in tackling lower order crime and disorder in Ipswich. More funding is going into CCTV, graffiti squads, and dealing with the causes of anti-social behaviour. Lib Dems are also introducing a street drinking ban to give police more powers to deal with drink-related issues. Councillors also shut Zest nightclub permanently following it becoming a draw for London-based criminals. Whilst there is much more to do we continue to support the robust approach of police and where we can ensure that the Borough Council is playing it's part as well. People don't want politicians just to moan about these problems but get on with tackling them - exactly what we think.
